LinkedIn SEO – 7 Actionable Tips To Become More Visible

by | Sep 24, 2018

LinkedIn is a massively powerful tool for business to business relationship building, recruitment, and ultimately lead generation. You have a targeted, engaged audience of people wanting to do business right at your fingertips.

In order to be found by the right people, and give off the right impression, your profile needs to be optimised correctly. This means deploying key elements of LinkedIn SEO to make it more 'searchable' in search results.

Here are some steps you can take right now to dramatically increase your visibility in search:

1) Claim Your Custom URL

The first thing you need to do is make sure that when someone searches for you, they find a professional, easy to remember, and easy to type URL. This means having a URL like '' rather than ''. Try and make sure that you can get your full name into the URL to make it more personal and memorable.

2) Upload a Professional Profile Picture

Using a high quality photograph, where people can clearly see your face is important to give off the right impression. Consider using the same photograph across the different social media platforms to keep consistency.

3) Add Search Friendly Keywords To Your Job Title

If a potential client was to search for you on LinkedIn by job title, what would they search for?

For example, I know my potential clients would search for 'freelance digital marketing manager', so that is what my job title is. I could also add in 'Digital Marketing Manager specialising in SEO | Social Media Management | PPC'. That way I show up for 4 keywords and services offered.

4) Optimise Your Job Descriptions

Providing an accurate but also keyword rich description of what you do is an excellent way to showcase your expertise to potential new connections.

Use short sentences and bullet points that accurately describe what you do, using keywords where relevant and backed up with any major accomplishments you have achieved in that role.

5) Get More Recommendations

Recommendations builds up trust and credibility. The more people you have singing your praises and recommending your expertise, the more likely someone new will have a positive first impression, and get in touch.

6) Grow Your Network

How many people are in your current network biases how many people you can add into your future one and how many people will see your content. The rule of 1st connections, 2nd connections, and 3rd connections means that you can't add anyone outside of that sphere without submitting their email address to LinkedIn directly to prove a connection already exists. The more 1st and 2nd connections you have, the more opportunities you have to expand even further as you can bypass the email address submission process.

7) Create Engaging Content

Crafting an insightful update, writing an information article, and linking to your website are all great ways of keeping yourself front of mind and in the 'zone of expertise' when it comes to your connections. It can also help to drive traffic to your website or latest blog post.

LinkedIn is a powerful tool for business, and you should be using it to your absolute advantage.
